JOB PURPOSE:
Ranch Hand will work under the supervision of the Cattle Supervisor and Foreman to assist in varied ranch and livestock herd activities alongside other ranch hand employees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible to acquire, learn and practice all LBI Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) and comply with these standards as well as safety regulations pertinent to the department and job functions.
- Work with cow crew as needed in livestock movements, counting, and sorting.
- Assist in vaccinating, tagging, branding, castration, etc.
- Assist in conducting fence inspections and making necessary repairs ensuring integrity of the fence lines.
- Assist in upkeep and establishment of livestock pens, dog pens, feeding stations, gates, and ranch barns.
- Assisting in controlled burns to improve or preserve pastures.
OTHER DUTIES
- Assist in tractor operations as needed.
- Irrigation ditch maintenance as needed.
- Other various livestock and pasture activities will occasionally be scheduled and responsibility to participate as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
- Valid driver’s license with insurability.
B. Knowledge/Skills
- Knowledge of agricultural and wildlife management practices.
- Verbal and written communications.
- Attention to detail.
- Able to follow directions.
C. Education/Experience:
- College/vocational education in related field of agriculture and animal science preferred.
- Experience riding and working cattle, preferred.
- Experience with tractors and four-wheel drive vehicles with manual transmissions.
- Trailer towing experience.
D. Physical Demands & Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the individual will work outdoors in all kinds of weather. Physical strength is required due to riding and walking on irregular surfaces, lifting gear, hauling feed bags, moving gates, and maintaining fence lines, etc. The individual is regularly required to stand and walk for prolonged periods. Occasionally required to climb or balance; walk on uneven surfaces, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Routinely required to lift up to 50 pounds.
