Lykes Insurance has promoted Bill Taulbee, executive vice president in the company’s Winter Park office, to president and chief executive officer. He succeeds John Brabson, who stepped down effective Dec. 31.

Taulbee joined Lykes in 1985, and with the exception of a six-year period as vice president and chief operating officer of Dulando/Sunrise National Distributors, has held leadership positions with Lykes ever since.

Lykes Insurance was founded in 1925 by Lykes Bros. Inc., the influential, century-old privately held family company that once had 27 wholly owned subsidiaries and affiliated companies from shipping lines to juice processing to meat packing. The Lykes family is one of the most prominent in Tampa, with streets, buildings and educational facilities named for its members.

“Throughout our 90-year history, Lykes Insurance has believed in a consultative, partnership approach to client service,” Taulbee said in a statement announcing the promotion. “Despite challenging economic conditions and an increasingly competitive environment, we have never strayed from our commitment to long-term relationships with our clients.”

Lykes Insurance has offices in Winter Park, Tampa, Fort Myers and Sarasota and its headquarters is in the Park Tower in downtown Tampa, formerly known as the Lykes Building. Although Taulbee had been based in Winter Park, the headquarters will remain in Tampa.
